Throughout my travels, I designated certain places my home away from home. These areas mean something special to me and it is a place where I feel comfortable. You can find these places to be in the simplifies of places like Sandusky, Ohio or somewhere farther away like the Bahamas. This is where some of my favorite places and memories live. After spending the past two weeks in Italy, I have decided that this is a home away from home.
Not only have I created some of the most amazing memories there but I also felt close to this country. I have become much more accustomed to their culture and language. I remember the first time ordering in Italy was a complete disaster. My friends and I had no idea what we were doing and ended up paying and unusual amount of money on water. Now, I could understand what our servers were saying and order in a heartbeat. It is exhilarating to see what you can learn in two weeks. I went from knowing ciao to almost understanding someone who is speaking full-blown Italian to me.
From somewhere hectic like Rome to the peaceful scenery in Assisi, there is always something to see and learn. Italy is the home of culture, traditions, food and religion. Even if you are not religious, you will find yourself in complete awe by their churches and stories. I have learned so much on this trip thanks to all of our walking tours. I always saw tourist areas as a big trap but taking the time to learn about the history of the places you visit is worth it.
I am very sad to see this trip come to an end and have to part ways with many friends, but at the same time I cannot wait to go home. To all the brick oven pizza, gelato, wine, Italian pigeons and beautiful scenery, this is not a goodbye! I will make my return to Italy for the third time very soon but until then,
arrivederci e buona notte, Italia!
