I was very sad to leave Assisi. I wish we could have had more time in this lovely time, but we had to move on to Florence.
I have learned about Florence in my previous art history classes. I knew the Duomo was in Florence. But for some reason, I could not remember what else is in Florence. Then, it hit me that David by Michelangelo is in Florence!
However, before we saw David, we were allotted some free time again to shop and grab some lunch. I was not aware that Florence is known for leather. However, our tour guide warned us that all of the leather is not genuine.
I did not buy many souvenirs today because I knew tomorrow is a free day. However, I did buy two key chains that look like David’s manhood. I bought one for my boyfriend’s brother and one for my work friend, Jesus.
After free time was over, we finally got to see David! Our tour guide Helena did an excellent job of telling the story of David. This 14-foot-tall statue is meant to represent the moment before David went into battle.
Seeing David has always been on my bucket list for years! I was completely astonished by this work of art. It took my breath away.
To be honest, I enjoyed David over Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Do not get me wrong, the Sistine Chapel was beautiful, but David is wonderful. The only critique I have of David is that his right hand is obviously too big for his body.
Florence is more than I expected. I like it a lot more than Rome. It is a very clean city, but full of people. I look forward to having some free time to chill and shop tomorrow.
