Today was the day that we traded the Roman life for the town of Assisi. I woke up at around 6:30 a.m. to get ready for the 3-hour bus trip to Assisi. I didn’t sleep much on the bus, but it was enough to help me stay awake for the rest of the day. At least I got to look out the window to the beautiful Italian countryside. I was just really happy that when we stopped for a bathroom break I found frozen coffee. Ever since the espresso incident, I haven’t been able to bring myself to drink espresso so I was really happy that I found it.
The drive was full of mountains and trees. We made it to Assisi, which is on top of a mountain, and we got to break for lunch. We wanted to try something different, so we went to a restaurant that Matteo recommended. That is where I have met my favorite pasta dish of the trip. I couldn’t pronounce it but it was rigatoni with a white sauce and beef. I loved it.
After, lunch we met with the rest of the class and went for a tour of the church of Saint Claire and the Basilica of Saint Francis. I thought the churches were really beautiful and I loved the architecture from the outside. I’m, personally, not a huge fan of churches but I appreciated seeing them and their history.
Matteo announced that we would be going on a wine tasting and cheese tasting after the tour of the Basilica. My favorite part was the cheese for sure. I ended up buying both of the cheeses we tasted because I think its something that my family really needs to try.
Then it was time for dinner. The whole class went to a restaurant and had a great three-course dinner. The first course was bread with meats and vegetables. I was sad because they brought out the pasta and it was loaded with mushrooms, that I recently found out that I am allergic to. Luckily, they brought me pasta with red sauce and it was still awesome. We ended the meal with a salad and delicious rosemary potatoes.
We made it to the hotel and it a really nice one. Our rooms are pretty large with a nice bathroom. Sadly, we can only stay for one night and it’s on to Florence!
