Firstly, I want to make it a point that mostly everyone woke up with huge bug bites. Some all over their faces. Apparently everyone who left their window open over night got swarmed with bugs. The only person who got bit in our room is Carmen.
After checking out of Assisi, we left the city a little earlier than planned because the German Prime Minister (according to Matteo, she’s a terrible person and nobody likes her) was arriving in the city. They had news (RAI) and security there the day before and were closing down the streets early, which forced us to leave earlier so we were able to actually leave.
There was a ton of traffic coming out of the city. When we finally arrived in Florence, our bus driver backed in a small alley of the hotel dodging cars and people. It was super impressive how he knows this bus. (Notice the “Dodgeball” movie reference in the title…)
As soon as we got into Florence, we made a 20 minute stop at the from Piazalle Michelangelo to take some pictures. I can tell you that no pictures could do that view justice.
We dropped our suitcases off in the luggage area since it was too early for us to check in and went right away on a walking tour. We went into the Accademia museum and saw the original statue of David, which was absolutely incredible. It was a lot bigger than I pictured and had much more tiny detail than the replicas that are around.
Our tour guide had a lot of interesting little details about the city that she kept pointing out such as the places to “park” your horses or the little tiny doors that were meant for wine delivery.
We also did a guided tour of The duomo, and it was absolutely incredible. It’s the hugest church I’ve ever seen and I couldn’t even image the size of mass they have in there.
From the tour, we had dinner on at a pizzeria. The crust there was so thick like American pizza, but the bottom was thin like Italian pizza. I was unable to finish mine but I made sure to at least eat all of the cheese.
From there we had a free evening, so we caught up some blogs and relaxed.
