I could have spent days in Assisi, but our group headed out on our bus to Florence next. Of course, because Angela Merkel was expected in Assisi that day, many of the roads were planned to be closed off that day to prepare. So, we had to get up a bit earlier to leave Assisi before we were prohibited from using the streets. I took a well needed nap on the bus and woke up to the beautiful view of Piazzale Michelangelo. It looked like Florence stretched on forever, and the city was populated with building after building. After 20 minutes for photos, we headed into Florence to continue our day.
We walked past the Duomo, and Matteo let us go from there for lunch and some free time. Kelsey and I went to a restaurant on a side street, and we ordered french fries. Although it wasn’t quite American quality (aka, these tasted fresher) it was still a nice break from pizza and pasta. We finished up our lunch with a quick stop to get gelato. Kels and I used the rest of our free time to shop around a little bit before heading back towards the Duomo for a tour of Florence, which included a stop to Academia to see the statue of David. My favorite part of the tour was seeing the Medici house because I learned so much about them in high school that it was cool to see where everything took place in person.
We finished out the night at a pizzeria for a group dinner. We checked into our new hotel knowing we would be able to finally sleep in a bit the next morning.
