“Send my pictures with captions,” my dad said in a text.
I chuckled to myself. Okay dad.
Today was our first say in Florence, so I sent him a picture of the highlight of the day.
Insert picture of pizza
Just kidding – it wasn’t pizza. Although we had some damn good pizza.
The highlight of today was seeing the statue of David. Standing 17 feet tall and made between the years 1501 and 1504, the statue of David is a Renaissance masterpiece my Michelangelo. It’s grand body and intricate details make it a breathtaking piece of art. From the perfectly sculpted veins in the arms and the muscles on the back, it is hard to believe that one man, so many years ago, could possibly craft something like this with his hands.
When you look up at it, it almost brings a tear to your eye.
I thought about how much time, how much work, how much skill and how much dedication it took to create something so grand.
After I sent the picture of David to my dad, I realized that he didn’t know what the statue of David looks like. It’s not a problem – most people probably don’t, and he hasn’t seen a picture of it in many many years. But for a moment, I thought, “Wait, everyone should know about the statue of David!”
I was caught in my privilege – because that is exactly what it is. Being able to know such art, learn about it, and admire it in person, is a huge privilege I’ve been given by my studies at Point Park. Not everyone gets such a well-rounded education that allows them to appreciate the arts and history.
Besides our visit with David, we had a little time to explore and shop. Florence is full shops, and we found a fashionable one called Floreiza. Everything in this shop was so stylish – I wanted it all! I took notes on how they dressed the models with interesting layers and textures. (Oh how I want to be as fashionable as the Italians!) I ended up splurging on a pair of 70’s inspired flare pants. They are funky and fun and were calling my name. I wasn’t sure about buying them at first though – and then I heard my mother’s voice in my head. “Spend your money! You’re in Italy!” I knew that if she were there, she would have told me immediately to get them. I always discuss with my mom before making a purchase, and her voice in my head came in handy!
I talked to her this evening, by the way, and she said – “Yes! I would have told you to get them and a shirt to go with it too!”
Gotta love moms.
Stay tuned for a feature of my fancy new pants. I plan on wearing them in Milan!
